Every now and then, a piece of art comes along to remind us that there is more than one way to appreciate it. Ali’s Wedding, directed by Jeffrey Walker and starring Osamah Sami and Helena Sawires and billed as Australia’s first Muslim romantic comedy, is one such film.

All hell breaks loose when the son of a Muslim cleric lies about his medical entrance exam scores in Ali’s Wedding, a wholesale charmer based on the real-life experiences of its leading man, Osamah Sami.

The film trades mostly on broad, physical comedy, making it appealing to a wide audience. But the impact of Ali’s Wedding goes deeper than whether it can make audiences laugh.
