Recently widowed and cash-strapped Fern [Frances McDormand] decides to leave her longtime home town of Empire, Nevada following factory closures, and strike out on her own. Hitting the road in her converted white van, Fern embarks on a journey through the American West living as a modern-day, van-dwelling nomad.
