Set in the 14th century but spoken in a contemporary voice, Ophelia [Daisy Ridley] takes centre stage in the untold story of her tragic romance with Hamlet [George MacKay]. As a rebellious and motherless child, Ophelia is taken into Elsinore Castle by Queen Gertrude [Naomi Watts] as one of her most trusted ladies-in-waiting. Soon enough, Ophelia captures the affections of the young Prince Hamlet but soon the kingdom is on the brink of war and political intrigue and betrayal ensues. When Hamlet begins to unravel, Ophelia sharply navigates the rules of power in Denmark in order to protect a very dangerous secret.
