COMEDY  |  DRAMA:

Is there ever such a thing as a good lie?

Billi [Awkwafina], a struggling young artist in Brooklyn, isn’t so sure. While she frequently lies to her family, it’s only when she learns of her family’s Really Big Lie, that she is nearly blown away. Finding out her beloved Nai Nai [Shuzhen Zhao] has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, the whole family decides not to give her the bad news.  “Chinese people have a saying: when people get cancer, they die, but it’s not the cancer that kills them, it’s the fear,” says Billi’s mother [Diana Lin]. A hastily convened wedding provides the cover story to bring the extended family back to China to bid farewell to their unwitting matriarch. Disagreeing with the family action, Billi decides there’s only one thing to do: She must make her way to China to be with her dying grandmother, no matter what it takes. She’ll go. She’ll love. She’ll laugh.  She’ll cry.  And … she’ll lie like a rug.
