When Jacques Chirac was elected President of France in the mid 90s, he considered himself part of a new, political elite. Unlike his wife, Bernadette who was – well, just a wife.

But Bernadette has been in the background, tirelessly supporting Jacques’ long journey to attain the presidency. Now he is victorious, she hopes for the support of the nation but Bernadette’s viewed by the media as old-fashioned, out of touch and emotionally cold.

But after years of working behind the scenes to forge her husband’s career, Bernadette’s political instincts have been finely honed. And she has no desire to stay in the background, playing the little woman behind the Great Man.

So, Bernadette ditches the pearls and silk scarves, reinvents herself and makes it her mission to claim her own space in the spotlight, using her wit and political skills to champion just causes and to hopefully win the respect of the French people.

“Deneuve is equal parts stunning and hilarious.” Film Review
